GENEALOGY of the family
HUMPHREY
The family are an important country family, of landowners and country
gentlemen, who can be shown to have lived in Sussex for over 400 years. The
earliest known mention of the name is that of John Humphrey of Linfield who
married Anne daughter of Richard Gratwick, the marriage settlement being
dated 6 Edward VI (1553). Despite this tradition, however, and the fact that
the family apparently held arms, we are unable at this time to go back further
than Henry, the first of line below, who is described as of "Pevensey". Any
help will be appreciated! Even with the knowledge of Henry's son William
Henry's exact date of birth as 8th July 1799 and the knowledge of where the
latter's elder and younger sisters were born (Westham, Sussex), William
we have discovered was born in Hertford (Census 1861).
