Thanks to the kindly assistance of others, I have been able to piece together a Genealogy of the family 'MAURI' alias 'MAURY' from whom the Audcent and Pinot de Moira families of England descend. It is not comprehensive, and interested viewers are asked if they can correct or contribute additions to please contact me. Special thanks to my friends Jacques, Mark (2 of you), Martin, Sebastien, and cousins Fleurette, George, Philippe, Cyril and Alfredo, plus the assistance from a kindly American Librarian, for their help. The family Mauri alias Maury come from Seran (now Massac-Seran), Midi-Pyrenees, France. It is clear from the documents in my possession, that this Genealogy is nowhere complete. Some information has been taken from public sources and some from my family archives and those of my cousins. The information I possess relates to one line who emigrated to the West Indies and their immediate relatives during the period 1780-1806. We have now received some information from descendants from this line, but require corroboration and further details. My GG Grandfather Comte Hippolyte 'Henri' Pinot de Moira is known to have corresponded with his cousin the Comte Charles de Lapeyouse, who wrote from Paris in 1855 - and unfortunately for me and my readers , he passed to Maury his only copies of our mutual family documents and letters, from which it is clear that this Charles and his sister were the descendants of our common G Grandfather Jean-Baptiste Maury de Lapeyrouse and his wife d'Aillebout d'Argenteuil, of the West Indian line. Although Charles had promised to return the documents supplied by my forebear, these do not appear among our papers, and would appear to have either never been returned or were more likely lost in the post. The arms shown were taken from the coroneted (Comte) seal on the letter from Charles de Lapeyrouse to Henri Pinot de Moira, and the colours are as described in the Pinot de Moira registered Genealogy of 1846.

NB Henri stated in his notes that our family 'de Lapeyrouse' were NOT related to 'Picot' de Lapeyrouse, or the explorer de La Perouse.
24-3-2001 Interestingly I have now discovered via my good friend Martin, that both families - i.e. MAURY & PICOT de Lapeyrouse were present in Trinidad, owned land at Port of Spain, and both were apparently involved with sugar production before 1797. (Their entries on page 61 of “The Book of Trinidad” follow one another: No 35 is Louis Maury de la Peyrouse and No 36 is Picot de la Peyrouse). Further it appears that both families were present in the early days of settlement by Frenchmen, and both were apparently friends of Dert and St Laurent. Hence the source of confusion that has arisen with regard to known descendants 'de Lapeyrouse', it is clear that they could descend from either of these unrelated families, and records will require close scrutiny.

      - Andre DE MAURI DE LAPEYROUSE b. 1678, d. 1738 called St Hippolyte, (also MAURI DE SERAN, Seigneur de Laspeirouses, 1723), Seigneur de Lapeyrouse, Captain of the Militia at Lavaur in 1734 and Captain in the Regiment of Lyonnais, and Captain acting Major in the Regiment of Charolais. He m. by Contract dated 7th January 1715, before Maitre Audibert, Notaire at Belcastel, Elizabeth (alias Isabeau) DE DORTET (heiress of her aunt Marguerite de Dortet) - It is noted that Andre who was not the eldest had three brothers, one a Captain in the Regiment of Forez (see below), another Captain in the Regiment of Angoumois, and another who was killed when a Lieutenant in the Regiment of Charolais. Andre are known to have sold a house at 6 rue du Palais, Lavaur to Jacques Bonfil, a bourgeois of Fiac in the diocese of Castre on the 17th October 1723. Of their marriage they had issue of eleven children and were succeeded by four, as evidenced by an agreement dated 26th August 1767, at Lavaur, Senechaussee de Toulouse. Among the children were, Camp Commandant of the Cavalry of the Kings BodyGuards (Carabiniers), 2 sons in the Regiment of the Marechal du Turenne and one in the Regiment of the Queen's Infantry.
        
        Joseph-Gabriel DE MAURY DE LAPEYROUSE b. 18th February 1717, Belcastel, Tarn, d. 29th December 1781, Chevalier, called St Hippolyte, Chevalier de St Louis en 1754, Captain in the regiment d'Eu, Commandant of La Place de Marsillargues. He m. by Contract dated 29th January 1760, Maitre Pourtales, Notaire at St Hippolyte le Fort, Marie-Magdelaine DE MOREAU DE CHAMPLOIS (who inherited the Domaine de Percirol along with other properties as heiress of her aunt Magdelaine de Rey - will dated 3rd June (elsewhere September) 1749 and 5th April 1775), daughter of un-named DE MOREAU DE CHAMPLOIS, Lieutenant Colonel in the Regiment de Forest, who was killed at the siege of Fribourg, Chevalier St Louis and his wife Un-named Domergue. It is known that Joseph-Gabriel purchased a house and garden on the rue de la Carrierasse at St Hippolyte le Fort on the 11th December 1773. Of his marriage he had issue of four known children and on his death left the three sons and a daughter, the two younger boys in the Services:-

She brought with her a dowry of 30-40,000 livres. They lived at St Hippolyte le Fort, and of their marriage they had three children:-

Seran before 1806 Joseph Marie DE GIRARD, his 2nd marriage, Seigneur de Lauret, Valflaunes et St-Mathieu, d. 31/3/1827 Cazenove de Lauret, he had m. 1st 15/12/1789 his cousin Marie Francoise (Fanny) DORTET DE TESSAN. Joseph Marie was the son and heir of Claude 'Marc' and his wife Antoinette Bruguiere. Francoise and her husband lived at Seran Tarn, and had issue of a son and heir Adolphe. It seems clear that she is the Alexandrine de Lapeyrouse de Girard who sent a letter dated 28th January and 2nd July 1806 from Lavaur to her cousin Louise Simone Maury de Lapeyouse concerning family matters. She comments that she looked after Nanci the daughter of her cousin Louis when they stayed with her mother (in 1792).

        Louis DE MAURY who on the basis of known information would seem to have been a Batchelor. Louis who in his own words confirmed that he was the second eldest son, lived Seran in a small country property after 1769, he died without issue and is known to have been living in 1792. He wrote to Joseph Alexis de Vilestivaud by letters dated 10th October 1787, & 3rd July 1788, who had married his niece Louise Simone and to his niece on 3rd October 1792. In his will he left 1000 ecus to his niece Louise Simone Maury de Lapeyrouse, dtr of his brother Jean-Baptiste, which she received from her first cousin Magdelaine Victoire 'Alexandrine' Maury de Lapeyrouse de Girard in 1806.
        Jean-Baptiste DE MAURY DE LAPEYROUSE , b. 21/4/1722 France, Officer in the Regiment d'Eu, m. (? Marriage Contract dated 28/5/1764 Goyave, Grenada, - this doesn't tie in with our own information) 22/5/1751 or 22/11/1751 Grenada, (probably parish Riviere St. Jean or St Jacques), Marie Anne Felicite D'AILLEBOUT D'ARGENTEUIL, b 18/10/1728 Martinique, the youngest of the three children of Louis d'Aillebout d'Argenteuil, Captain at the port of Grenade, and his wife Marie Louise de Geoffroy de Vesinos d'Allandome, herself dtr of M. de Geofroy de Vesinos de la Grana d'Allandome and Mademoiselle Des Vergers de Sanois. Jean Baptiste was living at Choc in the parish of Notre Dame de la Conception at the time of marriage (1780) of his daughter Louise, at which time his wife lived at Port of Spain on the island of Trinidad in the home of their son Louis who ran a sugar plantation. Of his marriage, Jean Baptiste had issue of just one son and daughter:

        Louis MAURY DE LAPEYROUSE, b. 1755 d. 1796, Comte de Lapeyrouse, a sugar plantation owner at Port of Spain on the island of Trinidad, Godfather of Jean Baptiste Louis Andre Valerie DE VILESTIVAUD born 1786. From a letter written by his mother we know he had commenced his sugar plantation before July 1780 at Port of Spain, Trinidad. In 1789, he advised his sister Louise Simonne that he has poor health because of a wasting ailment with little hope of recovery, in September 1792 he travelled to France, with his daughter Nanci leaving his wife and two sons at home, and intended to return with two sisters-in-law back to Trinidad in the spring of 1793. The letters we have are confused, nowhere has it been made clear as to when Louis died, but one letter alone, dated 17th October using the republican calendar, but with no year mentioned indicates that he died of ill health having arrived home in Trinidad, following a short visit to France sometime between 1793 and 1801 inclusive. There is no correspondence dated later than the letter of the 8th October 1792 from Louis to his sister which is surprising. He was betrothed as early as Aug 1785 when his future wife was only 16, and m. 19/10/1785, (presumed at Port of Spain), Trinidad, Marie Andree 'Anne' Claire DE CASSIERE (she had two sisters), who was b c1769 in Guadeloupe the dtr of Jean Baptiste Marie DE CASSIERE, whose family originated from the Auvergne and Anne Francoise CORNETTE DE VENANCOURT. Anne returned to study (probably Clermont) in France accompanied by her mother prior to her marriage. Her mother was who came from Guadeloupe and whose family was stated as holding fine alliances (it's her mother 's family that appears to have had links with Clermont, France) was herself the dtr of Jean Baptiste who m. Anne Louise Lemercier de Beausoleil. [Interestingly, her grandfather Nicolas Cornette who had m. Louise Raguienne was the son of Antoine who m. Marie Colombe Mauviere (or Moniere) dit St Etienne dtr of Etienne and Marie Deloeuvre (or de Louvre). This Marie Colombe Mauviere or Moniere married twice 1st to Antoine Cornette as stated and 2nd to Louis de Mallevault of which marriage a son Charles m. Anne Marguerite Legardeur de Tilly (of parentage as yet unknown) and had issue of Marie Colombe who m. Gabriel de Clieu]. The de Cassiere family are known to have been residents in the district of La Brea some 12 leagues from Port of Spain before the marriage. Of their marriage Louis and Anne had issue:-
        
        'Nanci' Anne Louise MAURY de LAPEYROUSE, b. April 1787, d. 11/4/1848 Paris, travelled from Trinidad and entered Bordeaux, France with her father in September 1792, disguised as a boy, the eldest of the children. In a letter from her Aunt Louise Simone to a friend dated 1806, we learn that 'Nanci' has married, and we presume that this is the Nanci referred to, the name not being a common one. Nanci (her nickname) real name Anne Louise m. in 1801, Spanish isle of Trinidad de Barlovento (now known as the Windward Islands) - (Contract of Marriage before Maitre Ardila, Notaire dated 9/11/1801) Nicolas 'David' Remy COUDROY de LAUREAL b. 23/12/1773 Moule, Guadeloupe, the 5th child of Nicolas 'Leon' and Marie Madeleine Bruny de Chateaubrun, d. 1839 at home 'Chateau de Limours, lieu-dit le Couvent', age 66, bur. in the local cemetery. He was Chevalier de St Louis (1825). David was educated College Pont-Levoy entered the French Navy under his relative Admiral de la Jaille, fought in the Army of the Princes during the French Revolution, and was Major in the Regiment of the "Chasseurs Royaux Britanniques", later Major in St Lucie and then in Trinidad (1799-1801). Following the Peace of Amien (1801), he remained in Trinidad where he was to marry. He held the position of "Adjudant general de la Trinite Espagnole" (1802-1818). In 1818 he, his wife and children emigrated to France and bought the Chateau de Limours, lieu-dit le Couvent near Rambouillet, Seine et Oise. He held the post of Mayor of the Commune de Limours for many years, but resigned in 1830. Of their marriage they had eight children, of whom the only two boys dsp. Descendants exist in both France and USA. Nanci's succession is in the archives at Paris dated 19/3/1849. In this succession is mentioned that she had made payments for the care and education of Henri and Philippe de Lapeyrouse (I wonder if Philippe is the Leopold brother of Henri who follows later - dba) her nephews who were resident in Isle de la Trinite, also mentioned a nephew 'Joseph and/or Louis' who was in a desperate situation and required repayment. Further we note that M et Mdme Girard who resided at La Collange, had received money from Nanci and were paying interest to her and her descendants - these may perhaps be her cousin Mauri de Lapeyrouse de Girard and husband.

        I have a correspondant who wishes to learn the present whereabouts of two miniature portraits of Henri's great uncles 'Quatreboeufs des Sources', he confirms that Henri de Lapeyrouse wrote that these were in his possession.         Possibly a further child MAURY DE LAPEYROUSE b. ? c1801 is noted, for on the death of Louis, his wife's sister writing to his own sister advised her that his widow was with baby.
        
        FOOTNOTE: (At the moment confusion reigns with regard to the relationships of the MAURY DE LAPEYROUSE family, for which we do have some original correspondence for the period 1780-1806!! What is known is that my GGGrandfather Comte Hippolyte Henri Pinot de Moira was much later (1906) in touch with the ancient family "Bonfils", and they refer to each other as cousins, the link deriving from the marriage of Francois Joseph DE BONFILS around 1802 with Adelaide DE LAPEYROUSE and the addition of the LAPEYROUSE appelation to the Bonfils name - (Adelaide was confirmed, by the Bonfils pedigree as the sole heiress of the family). Accordingly, as is traditional, the family had applied for and was officially granted the use of the addition of the LAPEYROUSE name, so that the family then became "BONFILS DE LAPEYROUSE" . It seems clear that our forebears MAURY DE LAPEYROUSE were officially considered extinct by the date of the official grant, and the date of marriage would imply that Adelaide is likely to have been the daughter of Louis' cousin Laurent who was Mayor of St Hippolyte, Gard, and lived in Southern France. Yet we have recently learnt from descendants (George & Philippe) that Louis' had at least one son Louis who survived him and had male issue Charles.
        
        Affixed to one the family letters was Louis' red wax seal, indicating his title of Comte, and shows the family blazon which was "d'or, a une montagne de six coupeaux de sinople mouvante de la pointe de l'ecu, surmontee de deux tetes de Maures, de sable tortillees d'argent" all surmounted by the coronet of a Comte, the description is as contained in the Registered and approved Pinot de Moira Genealogy - registered at Paris 2nd July 1846, from which the colours are known. The last letter we possess written by Louis to his sister was dated the 8th October 1792, prior to leaving France for Trinidad.   In later correspondence dated 1805 and 1806 from a relation, we learn that a M. de Lapeyrouze left Bordeaux, France on the 15th September 1805 for America, the implication from another letter is that he went to Philadelphia, so this person would appear to be either one of Louis' sons or perhaps a son of Lapeyrouse de Girard, Mayor of St Hippolyte, Gard. We should perhaps refer to a letter dated 28th January 1806 from Louise Simone's female first cousin Magdelaine-Victoire-Alexandrine Lapeyrouse de Girard referring to the last remains of the MAURY family, she states "the children of my cousin, your brother, and those of my brother (Laurent de Maury de Lapeyrouse) in Saint Hippolyte are all that remain of the Maury's"; indicating that Louis and Laurent are the only ones whose issue are surnamed Maury 'de Lapeyrouse' - DBA).

He left St Lucia after 1786, but before 10 October 1787, with his wife and family and settled in Limoges.         Hippolyte Henri PINOT DE MOIRA, b. 3/10/1820, d. 20/2/1909, Comte de Rochepaule, Lawyer and Banker, m. 27/7/1846 Rosay, Aimee Heleine DE ST OUEN D'ERNEMONT, the daughter of Vicomte Yves Jacques Jules de St Ouen d'Ernemont and Aimee Megard. He, his wife, their younger children, and his nephew Arthur AUDCENT, emigrated to England around 1872. Henri was naturalised British on the 28/1/1879, and from his marriage both the AUDCENT and PINOT DE MOIRA families of England descend.

        Alexis Hippolyte DE VILESTIVAUD, Legion d'Honneur, b. 27/4/1800 Limoges, Haute Vienne, d. 13/7/1872 the sole remaining male heir of his father, Godfather to Hippolyte Henri Pinot de Moira his nephew, and who corresponded regularly around 1846-1850. Grand Senechal of the Order of the Temple in 1841. He is known to have spoken to the members of that order at a special meeting held on the 15th January 1841, (an original copy of the text is in my possession - dba) at the temple, then situated in Place-Royale (now Place des Vosges), Paris. Directeur de l'enregistrement des domaines et de Timbre at Laon, dept Aisne, President de la societe academique de Laon and commandant of the National Guard de Laon, he was appointed Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur on the 8th July 1863, and having retired from this post on the 1/1/1870 when he was to be named juge de paix for d'Anizy-le-Chateau, he died on the 13/7/1872, Merlieux (Aisne) in a car accident, at the age of 73. We know nothing as to whether he married, or had children.
        FOOTNOTE: The arms of the de Vilestivaud family, as set out in the registered and approved Pinot de Moira genealogy are: "d'azur 3 gerbes d'or". Hippolyte Alexis appears to have married and seems to have had a son Charles - but this is not yet clarified, but it is known that Hippolyte Alexis, or his line, was the last of his family, for he confirmed this fact and requested my GGrandfather H.H. Pinot de Moira, his nephew and Godson, to let him have all the papers held by him relating to the family de Vilestivaud. These papers included the official documents relating to their common forebear d'Aillebout d'Argenteuil including certificates of birth and marriage, together with the correspondence of his mother Louise Simonne Maury de Lapeyrouse to her cousin the Empress Josephine of France, accordingly we no longer have this information which is referred to in letters.

Madame de Boutaric on her death left her estate to her nephew Joseph-Gabriel Maury de Lapeyrouse in exchange for an annuity and the use of a house and furniture etc. He paid this annuity until his death in 1781, and then his children continued to pay until both she and her husband had died.

Antoine DE MAURY, Seigneur de Seran, Captain of the Infantry m. 2nd October 1731, Magdelaine DE REY, widow of Henry Solier (alias Sollie), Seigneur de Pereirol, and co-seigneur of Saint Hippolyte in the diocese of Ales. Magdelaine was the sister of Louise, who left a will dated 3rd September 1749, and was buried in the church of St Hippolyte le Fort. Antoine, having no issue, left by his will dated 2nd September 1743, his estate in favour of his nephew Pierre DE MAURY DE LAPEYROUSE, who lived at Lavaur in Laragais. On his death his wife remarried Laurent Alexandre Thivault, Seigneur de Mazeau, Captain in the Infantry and Chevalier St Louis. On her death she left her properties including the domaine of Pereirol to her niece Marie Magdelaine Moreau de Champlois wife of Joseph-Gabriel de Maury de Lapeyrouse. All we know is that there were links between the Mauri de Lapeyrouse of Trinidad and America (Philadelphia is mentioned). Family 'GALAUP' - de Galaup, de La Peyrouse (alias de La Perouse) of Albi
There has been much speculation and wishful thinking concerning the links of the various families "de Lapeyrouse", or "De Laperouse" to this family, who were the forebears of the famous explorer Jean-Francois Galaup de Laperouse. As my Great Grandfather Hippolyte Henri Pinot de Moira has already stated, there are definitely no links with the families Mauri de Lapeyrouse, or that known as Picot de Lapeyrouse with this family. The seigneuries are obviously based on a number of places of the same name and the family names differ. MAURI, PICOT & GALAUP.

The French Sailor and Explorer, Laperouse, was born Jean-Francois de Galaup in 1741 in Albi in the southwest of France. He was born into a family which had a long association with Albi and which held a position of some importance in the town. Over three hundred years, the family had, through hard work and strategic marriages, carefully built up its standing. They had originally been merchants but later were involved in law and medicine, with several of them becoming Consul in the town. The family first makes an appearance in the town records when Huc Galaup became Consul in 1478. His grandson, Jean, acquired an estate at Orban in 1558 and, with it, the right to add the participle "de" to the family name.

The family already possessed houses in Albi but Jean's son, Claude, added to them in the early 1600s by buying a property, just to the east of the town, at Le Go. This property is situated in a horseshoe of the River Tarn near a ford to Lescure, on the opposite bank of the river (the word "go" means ford). It would become the family's summer residence and Jean-Francois would be born there in 1741. Claude's sister Lavezonne married Clement de la Jonquiere, establishing a link with a more noble family and one which would prove influential in Laperouse's career. About this time the family had also acquired its own coat-of-arms.

Laperouse's parents were married in 1740. Victor-Joseph de Galaup, born 1709, married Marguerite de Resseguier, the daughter of a Colonel in the Regiment de Conde. Jean-Francois de Galaup was born the next year on 23 August 1741, the first of ten children. In a situation typical of the time, only two of his siblings, Martiane-Claire (born 1742) and Victoire-Henriette-Marguerite-Claire (born 1758) survived to adulthood and married. A third sister Marie-Anne-Charlotte (born 1743) became a noviate nun as Soeur Sainte Pelagie but she died when she was only eighteen. Antoine-Salvy-Melchior (1745-1747), Armand-Roch-Victor (1746-1748), Claire-Francoise (1747-1752), Jacques-Antoine-Victor (1749), Hippolyte-Victoire (1751) and Francoise-Marie-Therese (1755-1766) all died in childhood. When Jean-Francois left Albi for Brest in 1756, five of his brothers and sisters had already died.

The de Galaup family had a farm outside Albi and the name of that farm (La Peyrouse) was chosen as the suffix to the family name, which therefore became "de Galaup de la Perouse". The name appears sometimes as La Perouse and, at other times, as Laperouse. Jean-Francois would henceforth usually write it as one word and sign himself "Laperouse".
